Dr. Syed M. Shahid

Ethnic Advisory Group Member

Hello, I’m Dr. Syed M. Shahid. My journey began in Pakistan, where I earned my PhD in Medical & Health Science, building a robust foundation with an MSc and BSc in the same field. For over 12 years, I had the privilege of working as a researcher and academic at Pakistan's largest university and medical school, focusing on chronic disease risk factors in diverse ethnic populations.

In 2015, I brought my expertise to Aotearoa, New Zealand, where I have since been dedicated to advancing community health and wellbeing. I am currently a Senior Postgraduate Lecturer and Research Supervisor in Health Science at the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT). My previous roles include leading health programs at Aspire2 International and contributing as a Post-doctoral Researcher at the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences.

My research has spanned medical genetics, medical biochemistry, nutrition, and molecular biology, with a particular emphasis on chronic diseases affecting South Asian communities. I’ve identified key genetic and molecular variations within these populations, and my work has been showcased at over 65 international conferences in 13 countries. I’ve also guided the academic journeys of 5 PhD students and more than 50 master’s students while publishing over 60 research articles, three books and research manuals, and two book chapters.

I’ve been deeply involved in community engagement, collaborating with various public and private ethnic health and social wellbeing organizations in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. I’m passionate about translating complex research into accessible & popular science language, empowering community members with evidence-based knowledge. This hands-on approach enriches understanding and drives sustainable health and wellbeing in our communities.

I’m excited to bring my experience, enthusiasm, and commitment to the Ethnic Advisory Group at Asian Family Services, working together to enhance health outcomes and create a brighter and sustainable future for all.
