RULER is an evidence-based approach for integrating social and emotional learning into schools, developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. RULER applies “hard science” to the teaching of what have historically been called “soft skills.” RULER teaches the skills of emotional intelligence — those associated with:
• Recognizing,
• Understanding,
• Labeling,
• Expressing, and
• Regulating emotion.

1. Better understand ourselves and others
2. Work well in groups
3. Know when children need emotional support
• U -Understanding – Knowing the causes and consequences of our emotions helps us to:
1. Anticipate, manage, or prevent unwanted feelings in ourselves and others
2. Promote wanted feelings in ourselves and others
3. Support children’s emotional needs
• Labelling – knowing feeling words allows us to:
1. Communicate our feelings accurately
2. Manage our emotions
3. Recognize and understand the range of emotions others have
• Expressing – learning how to display our feelings helps us to:
1. Act in social situations skillfully
2. Model acceptable social behaviour for our children
• Regulating – Developing strategies to manage feelings allows us to:
1. Be more effective in reaching our goals
2. Make wise choices about how we respond to emotional situations
