Multi-Venue Exclusion (MVE)

The Multi-Venue Exclusion (MVE) scheme has been in place in New Zealand since 2011 as a formal harm-reduction measure, enabling individuals to self-exclude from multiple gambling venues without the need to attend each site individually. Once the exclusion process is activated, it is an offence for the excluded individual to enter the gambling areas of the nominated venues, and for venue operators to allow their entry. Breaches of an exclusion order may result in fines of up to $5,000 for venue managers or their representatives, and up to $500 for the excluded individual, in accordance with Section 312 of the Gambling Act 2003. The MVE system has gradually evolved from a regional initiative to a nationally coordinated programme.
Within Asian Family Services, culturally responsive MVE support is provided through a dedicated MVE Coordinator who can communicate in Chinese, Korean, Hindi, and Vietnamese. In addition to counselling, our practitioners are committed to raising awareness of gambling-related harm, increasing understanding of available support services, and encouraging individuals and families to seek help. We emphasise that seeking support is both appropriate and strongly encouraged, and that speaking with a professional can be a crucial first step toward recovery.
It is Okay to ask for support.
